Authenticity of Sport
Introduction
Let us begin with...
What is Authenticity in Sport?
That which determines whether it’s real.
The connection.
The expression of feeling.
The faces of sport.
We have determined its definition as:
The authenticity of power and emotion that is expressed through a particular activity or sport.
Guiding Principles:
Authenticity of Sport comes through when emotion—from elation to determination—and power of body match the level of action and intensity of the sport. Achieving that authenticity is doable with some thoughtful approaches and considerations.
Here are some tips for bringing it to life:
1. The Face of Sport
When capturing authenticity in sport, it’s human nature that our gaze is drawn to the face. The emotion we see determines how we read the moment. Triumph, joy, grit, determination, reflection, confidence—an expression can emote a wide range. We encourage talent to be expressive and allow the emotion to come through the image.
The face of sport is also the interaction between individuals. When photographing groups, we look for those visible connections, unspoken looks and natural expressions help tell the story.
2. Glow On
Don’t be afraid to embrace the exertion and effort that it takes to perform an activity or sport. When the body rewards us with a subtle sheen or a bead of sweat across the skin, let it shine through. This helps to tell the story that we play for the love of sport.
Our intent is not to capture talent that are sweating profusely or look haggard.
3. Action Heroes
Capturing a moment that expresses an action is about allowing said action to unfold. To be as real as possible. Each sport has its own set of nuances that make it look natural when executed.
From the way a bat is held before a swing to the proper foot positioning in soccer to how a hand is slightly curled or fully extended when in a run vs. sprint—these are the details we look for when accessing the realness and ultimate authenticity of the action.
For more information relating to Sports Activities and how to best determine and prepare for our shoots, we will be creating a Sports Guide reference.
4. Rest + Recover
While action-filled moments play a huge role in our photography, there are other moments in sport that are worth capturing.
The stretching prep before a run, or the catch-your-breath breaks between sets, that need to stop and refuel before pushing on, the hands-on-hips or bent-over-stance upon completion.
As important as the activity themselves, capturing these moments show will power and resilience—to face the challenge and get to the finish line.
