Copy Style Guide

What is a Copy Style Guide?

A style guide details a set of standards for writing, editing and formatting content. While a Brand Guide focuses on the overall look, feel and visual identity, this type of manual or “style sheet” focuses on writing, editing, grammar, punctuation and common brand terms.

Why use a Copy Style Guide?

Fix punctuation. Eliminate grammar errors. Improve word choice. Write better sentences. It’s not glamourous, but guess what? It makes our personality shine. (It makes us look smart, too.) How? Just as our friends and neighbours are reliably their awesome selves, we too should present a common personality through how we communicate on our websites, emails, ads and other forms of communication. It’s this consistency across every touch-point that a continuous brand experience is met and helps build brand integrity.

Common terms, punctuation, grammar & best practices

Our copy guidelines are based on, and in accordance with, CP Style (Canadian Press) spelling and grammar. These guidelines reflect the common use of copy  and formatting we use across all channels.

They include the following:
Typecase
Punctuation
Dates, numbers & time
Brand terms & formatting
